Low Purine Diet

Some dogs need a low purine diet because they are at genetic risk of developing bladder or kidney stones along with other problems associated with a buildup of uric acid. Uric acid is produced when their bodies attempt to break down purine.

Which breeds may need a low purine diet?

Dalmations along with Miniature Schnauzers are the most commonly associated breeds in need of a low purine diet while some other breeds, particularly later in their life, are genetically at risk from this issue such as Yorkshire Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Bulldogs and Miniature Poodles (NB this is not a full list of dogs that may be affected).

Leish dogs

Leish dogs (dogs with Leishmaniasia) also need a low purine diet to help manage the disease and help avoid the build up of uric acid that leads to urinary issues and potentially kidney or bladder stones.

Which ingredients are high in purine?

The most common ingredients you may find high purine in dog treats or food is in offal such as hearts, liver or kidneys.
It is also high in gamey-meats such as venison or duck, oily fish such as mackerel, some green vegetables like spinach or peas and legumes like lentils.
