HQ Training Drill: Treat Throw Recall - An Easy Recall Game for Dogs
HQ Training Dispatch
Treat Throw Recall
A simple Agent drill that turns chasing treats into useful recall practice.
HQ has approved a wonderfully simple recall game requiring nothing more complicated than treats, a little space and an Agent willing to pursue airborne catering.
This drill is called Treat Throw Recall. Throw a treat ahead of your dog, then call them back just as they finish eating and naturally begin turning towards you.
Because your Agent is already likely to return, it gives them an easy opportunity to succeed. Their name or recall cue becomes connected with turning back towards you and receiving another reward.
What this drill helps with
Treat Throw Recall gives your dog a chance to practise:
- Waiting briefly before the game begins
- Responding to their name or usual recall cue
- Turning back towards you after finding a treat
- Learning that returning when called is rewarding
- Building confidence through easy successful recalls
What you need
- A handful of small, high-value treats
- Your Agent
- A safe space where you can throw treats a short distance
- Your dog’s name or usual recall cue
- A release word, such as “Go”
Field Instructions
How to play Treat Throw Recall
1. Ask your Agent to wait
Begin with your dog sitting, standing or simply pausing in front of you.
2. Throw the first treat
Throw one treat a short distance ahead and say your release word, such as “Go”.
3. Let them find it
Allow your Agent to chase after the treat and snaffle it without calling them immediately.
4. Watch for the turn
As your dog finishes the treat and begins naturally turning back towards you, call their name or use their usual recall cue.
5. Reward the return
Welcome your Agent back enthusiastically. You can reward them close to you or prepare to throw the next treat.
6. Repeat the drill
Throw another treat and repeat the same pattern, calling your dog as they begin turning back.
7. Finish while they want more
End after a few successful recalls while your Agent is still enjoying the game and fully committed to the catering arrangements.
Commander notes
- Play indoors or in a secure enclosed garden, away from roads and other hazards.
- Use small treats that your dog can eat quickly.
- Call your dog when they are already beginning to turn towards you. This makes success much more likely.
- Use one clear recall cue rather than repeating it several times.
- Keep the throws short and easy, especially with puppies or recall beginners.
- Finish after a few good returns rather than continuing until your Agent loses interest.
Agent difficulty levels
Level 1: Recruit
Throw the treat only a short distance and call your Agent as soon as they begin turning back towards you.
Level 2: Field Agent
Increase the throwing distance slightly while continuing to call as your dog naturally turns to return.
Level 3: Elite Recall Operative
Once your Agent understands the game, call them a moment earlier, just after they finish the treat but before they have fully turned. Increase the challenge gradually and keep every return rewarding.
Try it with your Agent
Give Treat Throw Recall a go and report back in the comments.
Did your Agent race back every time? Begin turning before you called? Conclude that recall training was merely an unusually efficient treat delivery system?
Leave a comment below and add a photo of the training operation if you caught one.
HQ Summary
Treat Throw Recall is a quick, rewarding game that helps puppies and adult dogs practise turning back when called. Make each recall easy, reward the return and finish while your Agent is still ready for another round.
