HQ Training Drill: Treat Ball - An Easy Enrichment Game for Dogs
HQ Training Dispatch
Treat Ball
A simple Agent enrichment drill involving hidden treats, determined nibbling and a ball that refuses to surrender its supplies.
HQ has approved an easy enrichment game using a treat-dispensing ball and a handful of small treats.
This drill is called Treat Ball. Push treats into the openings at different depths, then let your Agent work out how to reach them.
Treats placed near the surface are easier to recover, while those pushed deeper inside require more persistence and problem-solving. Start generously before assigning your Agent to advanced extraction duties.
What this drill helps with
A Treat Ball gives your dog a chance to practise:
- Waiting while the game is prepared
- Focusing on you before being released
- Using their nose and mouth to investigate
- Persisting with a simple food puzzle
- Enjoying some extra mental stimulation indoors
What you need
- A suitable treat-dispensing ball
- A handful of small treats
- Your Agent
- A release word, such as “Go” or “Okay”
- A safe floor space for the ball to roll around
Field Instructions
How to play Treat Ball
1. Gather the supplies
Choose a suitable treat ball and several small treats that fit securely into its openings.
2. Test the treat depths
Push the treats into the ball at different depths. Leave some near the surface and place others slightly deeper inside.
3. Ask your Agent to wait
Ask your dog to sit, stand or simply pause while you prepare the ball.
4. Wait for their focus
Hold the ball and wait for your dog to look away from it and back towards you. A brief glance is enough when first learning the game.
5. Release the investigation
Place the ball on the floor, use your release word and let your Agent begin the treat extraction operation.
6. Watch how they investigate
Notice which treat depths your dog can manage comfortably and which prove too difficult. Adjust the next round accordingly.
7. Remove the ball at the right time
Take the ball away once the treats have been recovered or your Agent begins losing interest. Treat balls are puzzle equipment, not long-term chewing assignments.
Commander notes
- Choose a treat ball suitable for your dog’s size and chewing strength.
- Check the ball for damage before and after each game.
- Supervise your dog throughout the investigation.
- On the first attempt, leave several treats near the surface so they are easy to recover.
- Experiment with different depths to find the right challenge for your Agent.
- Remove the ball as soon as your dog loses interest or begins using it purely as a chew toy.
Agent difficulty levels
Level 1: Recruit
Place all the treats close to the openings so your Agent can nibble them out easily.
Level 2: Field Agent
Push some treats slightly deeper while leaving others near the surface to keep the operation rewarding.
Level 3: Elite Treat Extractor
Place more of the treats deeper inside the ball so your Agent needs to roll, grip and investigate it from different angles. Keep the challenge achievable rather than turning lunch into unpaid overtime.
Try it with your Agent
Give the Treat Ball drill a go and report back in the comments.
Did your Agent carefully nibble out every treat? Roll the ball around the entire room? Decide brute force was the only reasonable extraction policy?
Leave a comment below and add a photo of the investigation if you caught one.
HQ Summary
Treat Ball is a simple indoor enrichment game that encourages focus, persistence and problem-solving. Adjust the depth of the treats to match your Agent’s experience and remove the ball once the investigation is complete.
