The walk
J.R.R. Tolkien spent time in the countryside around Stonyhurst while working on The Lord of the Rings. The Tolkien Trail winds through the surrounding landscape, with views towards Stonyhurst College, woodland and riverside stretches. There is plenty for curious noses to investigate, though the hills and fields are firmly real-world Lancashire.
See the mapped Tolkien Trail and download the route from Visit Lancashire. Use the map or GPX rather than treating this guide as turn-by-turn directions. Different versions of the Tolkien Trail circulate, so follow the 5.5-mile version linked here.
What dog owners should know
- Livestock: sheep and cattle can be present in the farmland sections. Keep your dog under close control, follow local signs and use a lead around livestock.
- Stiles: parts of the trail include stiles. This is not a stile-free walk, and some dogs may need help negotiating obstacles.
- Underfoot: field paths can become muddy after rain. Wear suitable footwear and expect a muddy dog afterwards.
- Fitness: the length and varied terrain make this a better choice for dogs comfortable with a substantial countryside walk than for very young or less mobile dogs.
A dog walker reported completing this route in May 2026 and noted the woodland, fields, riverside sections, livestock and stiles. That is useful recent experience, not a guarantee of current conditions. Read the dog-walker route notes.
Back to the pub: Shireburn Arms
The Shireburn Arms welcomes dogs in both the bar area and dining room, so you can come inside together for something to eat. The pub has its own customer car park beside the building.
Our suggestion: book a table before heading out, particularly at popular times. Check the pub's current opening hours, parking signs and any changes to its dog policy before your visit.
Check the Shireburn Arms food, booking and dog information.
Before you set off
Check the forecast, current path notices and the route map. Countryside conditions, livestock locations and pub arrangements can change. Take water for your dog and be prepared to use a lead where needed.
