Janet's Foss Dog Walk | The Buck Inn, Malham | North Yorkshire

Janet's Foss waterfall beside the woodland path near Malham, North Yorkshire

A proper dog day out

A beckside wander, a waterfall with its own fairy legend, and a welcoming hikers' bar back in Malham. This is the Yorkshire Dales at its most sniffable, without needing to climb Malham Cove's limestone steps.

At a glance

  • Where: Malham, North Yorkshire, Yorkshire Dales National Park.
  • Walk: Malham village to Janet's Foss, 3 miles (4.8 km) return along the same path, not a circular route.
  • Allow: About 2 hours walking at a relaxed pace, plus time at the pub.
  • Difficulty: Moderate, despite the gentle distance: mostly surfaced paths, but rough woodland stones and slippery steps near the falls.
  • Start and finish: Yorkshire Dales National Park Centre car park, Malham, BD23 4DA (grid ref SD899627); pay-and-display.
  • Pub: The Buck Inn, Malham, Skipton, North Yorkshire BD23 4DA, in the same village.

The walk

From Malham's National Park Centre, follow the village beck out towards the fields, then take the signed path through gates towards Janet's Foss. The last woodland section has rougher stones, and the waterfall appears in a shaded limestone nook. Local folklore gives the fall its name from Janet, queen of the fairies. Return to Malham on the same path. The National Trust's 3-mile there-and-back route is distinct from longer Malham Cove and Gordale Scar circuits, so don't accidentally follow an ambitious one on a gentle day.

What dog owners should know

  • Leads and wildlife: The National Trust asks for dogs under close control, preferably on a lead. Follow seasonal signs: nesting birds, lambing and wildlife may require extra restraint.
  • Livestock: Fields may contain sheep or cattle. Keep a lead to hand and give livestock space.
  • Rocky footing: The path near the waterfall is uneven, with rocky steps that can be slippery after rain. This is not a fully step-free walk.
  • Water: Keep dogs clear of fast water and slippery rocks around the pool and beck. No need to enter the water to enjoy the route.
  • Facilities: The Malham National Park car park has public toilets; pay-and-display applies.

Back to the pub: The Buck Inn

The Buck Inn is close to the walking route in Malham, so there is no car journey between your hike and a drink. The Keighley & Craven CAMRA branch confirms that dogs and muddy boots are welcome in the Hikers Bar, with a beer garden accessible from there. That does not mean dogs are permitted in every restaurant area. The owner, Thwaites, also describes the inn as dog-friendly.

Our suggestion: ask to sit in the Hikers Bar when booking food, especially at weekends; check the current kitchen times instead of assuming they match bar opening.

Check The Buck Inn's current information and the independently checked dog-friendly details before setting off.

Before you set off

Take water, a towel for muddy paws and shoes with grip. Check the National Trust's route map and seasonal access notices. The woodland can be slippery; avoid planning a waterfall scramble. The pub's dog-welcoming Hikers Bar is the specific indoor option verified.
