Cape Cornwall Circular Dog Walk | The Commercial, St Just | Cornwall

Cape Cornwall headland and the old mining chimney near St Just

A proper dog day out

Clifftop air, Atlantic views and the ghosts of Cornwall's tin-mining past, followed by a proper pub in St Just's market square. A splendid walk for dogs who enjoy a longer adventure, provided their humans keep them safely back from the cliff edges.

The walk

Leave St Just for the old mining landscape of Kenidjack, then follow the South West Coast Path towards Cape Cornwall, where the chimney of a former mine stands above the sea. The loop continues towards Cot Valley and Porth Nanven before returning inland to St Just. It's a landscape of mining ruins, headlands and big Atlantic horizons, with quite a few changes underfoot.

Follow the mapped 5.2-mile Cape Cornwall walk from the South West Coast Path Association. Its detailed route instructions start and finish at St Just Market Square. Follow that specific version: there are other Cape Cornwall circuits of different lengths.

What dog owners should know

  • Cliff edges: keep dogs on leads on exposed coast-path sections and never let them investigate cliff edges or loose rock. Wind and wet ground increase the risk.
  • Stiles and steps: the official route mentions a stile, stone steps and uneven paths. It isn't a step-free or reliably stile-free outing.
  • Mining heritage: stay on established rights of way and away from fenced or unstable old mine workings, shafts and ruins.
  • Wildlife and beaches: seals and nesting seabirds may be present. Keep dogs away from wildlife and check seasonal beach restrictions before any optional beach detour; the mapped route does not require walking on a beach.
  • Roads and livestock: the circuit crosses roads and uses rural fields. Use a lead near roads, grazing animals and where signs require it.

Back to the pub: The Commercial

The Commercial is right on St Just's Market Square, where the route finishes. The pub's own bar page explicitly says well-behaved dogs are welcome for a drink or a bite to eat. It does not specify that every room is dog-friendly, so request a dog-welcoming table when you book. You can avoid an extra drive after the walk.

Check The Commercial's official dog-welcome statement, menus and contact details.

Before you set off

Check the forecast, coastal conditions and any Coast Path diversions. Carry water and a lead; take extra care in high winds or after rain. If you visit Porth Nanven as an optional diversion, beware of unstable cliffs and don't remove its protected rounded stones. The route source, not this article, should be your navigation guide.
